A Running List of Participants

As of 11 May, 2006, the following blogs will be participating in the Mother's Day fundraising:

Brandon, the maddeningly talented writer behind One Child Left Behind will be donating to Heifer International for every comment left on his Mother's Day post. Heifer International seeks to "change the world" by offering people economic means to sustain themselves. To accomplish this, clients are provided with food and income sources via livestock, education, and training. He's one of those authors who can make me laugh or make me cry. Often he manages to cause both at the same time, which is surprisingly painful, because it hurts to guffaw when you've got a big old lump in your throat. In my wildest dreams, I will someday grow up and be able to write like him.

The Soap Blog is written by Heather, who is the proud owner of Eie Flud. She hand crafts her products, all with a level of care that no line-factory produced product can ever be made with. This becomes quite evident after reading even just one of her posts on her blog. The time and consideration she clearly gives each and every product she sells is inspiring. As a reader and a consumer, I can't help but wish every businessperson were more like her. Heather has long been a staunch supporter of Unique. Unique has a mission "to inform, support and alleviate the isolation of anyone affected by a rare chromosome disorder and to raise public awareness." I think reading the aims of this organization poignantly demonstrtes how much help and support are needed for those individuals and families affected by rare chromosome disorders. Heather will be promoting Unique on May 14th, and I strongly encourage you to say hello to her, discover her lovely line of fragrant goodies, and learn more about Unique!

Yankee Family goes South may sound like a self-explanitory title, but its so much more than just about a move. Who knew there could be real estate problems because of diverging accents? Who knew anyone would ever get into their head to not only deep-fat fry a Snickers bar, but to actually serve it others? She even covers a hairstyle almost as horrifying as the dreaded mullet, and certainly more dated than the Dorothy Hamill: the bouffant. Please visit this charming lady to read her stories on Mother's Day, when she will be supporting Orphan Foundation of America.

That Obscure Object of Desire is a relative new kid on the blogging block, but it's off to a fine start. Pretty clothes? Check. Pretty decorating ideas? Check. Pretty toiletries and cosmetic goodies? Check. So many lovely objects, so little time! The author Jennifer will be supporting FINCA International to celebrate Mother's Day, so please pop in and say hullo!

Mother Hen's Place is... well, you know, it's just flat out cozy. The kind of place where you want to pull up a good chair, sit down with a nice cup of tea, and chit-chat with one of the most charming and kind individuals you'd ever get the chance to listen to. Her choices in topic vary from post to post, and even the things she swears aren't interesting become interesting the way she tells it all. On May 14th she will be supporting Aga Khan Foundation Canada, a non-profit international agency that supports social development programs in Asia and Africa.

Shannon, the author of A Girl's Gotta Spa, has such a fun enthusiastic way with all manner of self-pampering and girly routines. She's written some great product suggestions, ranging from those found in the big department stores to those of the very cute line she reps for called Country Bunny Bath & Body. She's also inspired me with some nifty ideas for making over my own bathroom after seeing the pics of hers.

SmellyBlog is the personal journal of Ayala Sender, the amazingly knowledgable perfumer behind Quinta Essentia. Her practice of natural perfumery is thoroughly rooted in her deep appeciation and love of the natural world. Her blog's reflections and information about the smells of the world around us are both touching and engrossing. Please stop by and visit her on Mother's Day, where she will be supporting FINCA International. For one lucky commenter that day, she will be giving away a bottle of Altruism, one of the signature scents she created for Quinta Essentia.

Blogdorf Goodman is THE essential fashion and beauty site for any would-be style maven. As many of its readers have already agreed, "Blogdorf Goodman is better than Allure." And better than Vogue, too, I might add. Annie's snarkily hilarious when she disapproves of a product, and sometimes even when she likes it. Her passion for the subject of fashion is infectious, so please don't miss out on all the fun there! She will be supporing FINCA International.

Scenteur 7 is the brainchild of Marlen, who many of you may have already have been familiar with before he fired up his blog because he also writes scrumptious columns for Basenotes and reviews for Now Smell This. His site details his impressions of everything that smells with his razor-sharp humor and wit. His features on great deals on great scents is terribly helpful, and you really oughtn't miss his posts that dredge up old (and usually quite funny) perfume ads from the past. Marlen will be donating $1 to Orphan Foundation of America for every comment left on his blog between May 10th and May 15th.

The Scented Salamander is Helene's perfume blog. Her very thoughtful reviews often muse on the stories of notes and names. She also writes posts covering intresting perfume news and tidbits that may well have otherwise been missed by readers if they only scan the headlines in their daily papers. I especially love how she digs up obscure perfume references in literature and pairs them with a carefully chosen art image. It's a lovely, peaceful blog, so do please stop by and say "hello!" to Helene. On Mother's Day she will be supporting Orphan Foundation of America, and will hold a drawing for one very lucky Mother's Day commenter to win a bottle of Eau de Patou!

Kristen, who writes Beauty Addict is a confessed makeup junkie whose site is likewise addictive. Without fail, Kristen delivers the skinny on everything that's bound to pretty you up, with product reviews covering makeup (of course!), fragrance, hair care, skin care, good reads, and bath and body products. Please don't miss her "Silly Celebrity Makeup of the Week" features, which never fails to amuse. Beauty Addict will be donating a dollar to Orphan Foundation of America for every comment made on her blog post on Mother's Day.

Legerdenez is written by Cait Shorell, whose big beautiful brain I would love to crawl inside just to see how it works. Her sharp sythetical mind is able to see connections between different art forms in ways that are exciting and surprising. Her appreciation of perfumery, art, and literature never fail to inform and entertain. Legerdenez will be donating $1 for every comment made on the post on Mother's Day to Orphan Foundation of America, and in addition will be holding a drawing for a perfume giveaway.

Victoria of Victoria's Own has beautiful taste, and daily shares both her scent of the day as well as a photo of the day, usually taken from some favorite spot in Paris. Her readers offer up comments on what their choice of fragrance is for the day as well, and the range of perfumes worn by all is impressive. Reading her unpretentious and straightforward reviews is a delight, and no can ever predict what she will be wearing next because her curiosity is so far-reaching. Victoria will be sponsoring FINCA International on Mother's Day.

Brain Trapped In Girl's Body is Tania's blog. She has a cunning way with language; she is its mistress, making it do what she wants when she wants. Her blog has sported a wide range of topics, from cooking to perfume to economics to science, and she covers all of it with her characteristic intelligence and charm. She's also the author of a crazy and fun novel written in the word-spree that is NaNoWriMo, which you can read in full by clicking on her archives for November of 2005. She will be supporing FINCA International.

Perfumery will be raising money for FINCA International. Andy Tauer will be making a one dollar donation for every comment left on his blog. Excitingly, he is also being generous enough to hold a random drawing to win one of his exquisite perfumes, your choice of either le Maroc pour elle (50 ml) or the L’air du désert marocain (100 ml) should you be the lucky soul whose name is drawn. If you are already a commenter there, please stop by, and if you are new to his blog, come by say "hi!" and discover his lovely words and gorgeous perfumes.

March and Patty from Peppermint Patty's Perfume Posse will be raising money for Orphan Foundation of America on Mother's Day. These two lovely perfume-nuts have style, brains, and are raucously fun to read. Please drop in whether you are a stranger they just haven't met yet or one of their dedicated readers on Mother's Day to give them a big howdy!

Perfume-Smellin' Things is run by Marina, who writes so elegantly you would swear some of her perfume reviews are poetry. Her honest and graceful reviews have already won her a loyal readership, and if you are new to her you'll find much to like, and if you already love her writing then I'm just preaching to the choir, ain't I? Marina will be fundraising for Orphan Foundation of America on May 14th.

Urban Chick zanily and breezily discusses topics ranging from the profound (shoes) to the profane (life.) She's so witty it is almost scary, and she regularly makes her readers laugh until they cry. Please be sure to check out her list of regularly changing taglines, which are simply hilarious. She will be making a donation of £1 per comment to the UK based charity Womankind Worldwide for the date of May 12th rather than the 14th, since she will be out of town on that day. Womankind Worldwide "has three aims: 1. To advance women’s status and wellbeing through increasing their political and civil participation, 2. To reduce violence against women, 3. To inform and influence policy and practice at local, national, regional and international levels."

Scentzilla is my blog, which pretty much details my ever-growing addiction to fragrances. I'm a dork, what can I say? I will be donating one dollar for every comment left on the special Mother's Day post I will make on my blog to FINCA International. I hope you will stop by to say hi whether you are new to Scentzilla, or already a reader.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has signed up to participate thus far! If I have missed your email or notification with this post, don't worry, I will be regularly updating this page!

About Benevolent Blogging

In appreciation of Mother's Day which is just around the bend, let's celebrate the day not with flowers or candy, but with real giving.

Participating bloggers will donate to charity a set amount of money for each comment left on Mother's Day in either a specific post, or at their discretion, in any post within their blog. A good nice even amount would be to donate a dollar for every comment made.

The charities we'd like to concentrate on are:

FINCA International. FINCA provides loans to low-income microentrepreneurs, focusing especially on women. From FINCA's website - " Of the 1.3 billion people living in poverty worldwide, women account for 70 percent. In the developing world, and even in the United States, a woman's chances of receiving credit are markedly lower than a man's, and yet, in an increasing number of families, the woman provides a substantial portion—or all—of the family's income." FINCA operates on a global level, with active programs in Latin America, Eurasia, Central Asia, and Africa. This organization receives CharityNavigator.org's highest rating of four stars, which you can view by clicking here.

Orphan Foundation of America, which "has served thousands of foster teens all across the United States. From teaching youth how to balance a checkbook, write a resume, and apply for that first big job, to testifying before Congress and State Legislatures, OFA has long been a vocal champion of foster teens... Each year OFA and its scholarship partners award more funding and provide a stronger safety net for those pursuing post-secondary education." OFA also received a four star rating from CharityNavigator, which can be viewed by clicking here. In addition to financial donations, OFA also has opportunities for knitters to donate the products of their artistry. There is additionally the option for women to join the Pink Panel, run by The Benchmarking Company, who will donate $5.00 to a scholarship fund run by the OFA each time a woman joins or fills out a beauty survey.
